I am currently in Nashville for the 9th Annual Pharmacy, Pharma Services and 340B Conference hosted by Bass, Berry & Sims. The conference is primarily attended by attorneys who focus on specialty pharmacy, pharma manufacturers, and other specific areas related to pharmacy and refining their expertise related to law in these sub segments.

I will be presenting on AI and pharmacy with a focus on ethical issues and contributing to the discussion as a panelist on the topic.

Last month, I attended NASP25 feeling energized and encouraged by what I saw across specialty pharmacy. Record attendance, strong content across the tracks, and a clear signal that our work is evolving in ways that can genuinely improve patient lives. In this issue, I’m pleased to feature a perspective from our guest contributor and RxRoundtable Professional Member, Chuck Collins, President of Healthcare Stakeholder Solutions, who captured the spirit of the meeting with clarity and heart. Chuck spotlights three themes that stood out for me as well: the maturation of cell and gene therapies, the continued need to customize rare disease programs, and the everyday importance of present, authentic communication in our patient and partner interactions.

Chuck shares about how one moment stayed with him when Taylor John, a gene therapy-treated patient living free of sickle-cell crises, shared her journey. It’s a reminder that all of our innovation only matters if it reaches and helps the person in front of us. Harvard Medical School researchers, in September 2024, announced the results of a study determining the effectiveness of their newly developed AI system called CHIEF (Clinical Histopathology Imaging Evaluation Foundation). CHIEF can perform multiple diagnostic tasks across 19 different cancer types going far beyond prior AI tools. The results showed 94% accuracy and a 36% improvement over other models.

One year later, and just a few days ago, Harvard announced a new complementary AI tool that focuses on identifying genes and drug combinations to restore health in diseased cells.

These are the early steps of the predicted revolution in drug discovery that AI may bring.

The impact of AI on the white collar workforce is starting to become more evident. Accenture CEO Julie Sweet, told analysts on the firm’s recent earnings call, “We are exiting on a compressed timeline, people where reskilling, based on our experience, is not a viable path for the skills we need.” She continued, “Every new wave of technology has a time where you have to train and retool. Accenture’s core competency is to do that at scale.”

The Accenture announcement exemplifies the logic in the often heard maxim, you should not fear AI, but you should be worried about your colleagues who know how to use AI better than you.
