Healthcare’s autonomous momentI've been thinking a lot lately about how differently we seem to evaluate technology depending on where it shows up in our lives. We are increasingly becoming comfortable trusting AI in areas that carry real consequences, including autonomous vehicles that make decisions every second while navigating challenging roads, dense traffic, and unpredictable drivers. At the same time, when we lay the same perspective onto healthcare and AI-assisted clinical decision-making, our expectations change dramatically. We tend to hold these systems to a near impossible standard before the public is willing to trust them. As I thought more about that comparison, I began wondering whether healthcare may be approaching its own autonomous moment. In this issue’s article, I expand on the parallels between self-driving technology and AI clinicians and the adoption—or resistance—of each. I question why I believe we should consider stopping the comparison of innovation against perfection, and how healthcare leaders should reframe what oversight, trust, and progress looks like in an AI-enabled future (article link below).
