Ten AI developments that keep me up at night (and why you should care too)

I’m going to be honest with you. I’m worried.

I spend hours each week listening to AI podcasts like The AI Daily Brief and The Last Invention. I read the research. I track the announcements. And the more I learn, the more concerned I become about the direction we’re heading.

Here’s what troubles me most: AI is largely unregulated, and its future is being shaped by a very small number of companies and individuals. Most of us are watching from the sidelines while decisions that will fundamentally reshape our economy, our jobs, our energy infrastructure, and even how we educate our children are being made without broad public input.

I’m trying to practice what I’m preaching here. I’m having ongoing conversations with my son, who's a teacher, about the challenges he's seeing in his classroom. I’m forcing myself to be thoughtful about my own AI use, especially in my writing, resisting the pull to let it do more than I should. These aren't easy questions, and I don't have all the answers, but I’m engaging with them.

That’s what I’m asking of you too: engagement. Not next year. Now.

In this week’s briefing, I’m sharing ten AI developments that I think deserve your attention and, frankly, your concern. These aren’t abstract tech trends, they’re changes that will impact your business, your community, your investments, and your family.

What I’m asking you to consider:

• Why the rapid pace of AI innovation means we can’t afford to “wait and see”

• How AI-driven scientific acceleration raises questions about oversight and safety

• What job market displacement means for the next generation entering the workforce

• Why energy and water consumption from AI infrastructure will affect your utility bills and your community resources

• How the concentration of AI development in a few companies creates risks we should all understand

Now, I know some of you reading this are already using AI productively in your businesses. Some of you see tremendous opportunity here. I see that too. But I also see risks that aren’t being adequately debated in public forums.

My hope is that you’ll pick at least one from this list, get educated on it, and join the conversation. Talk with your colleagues. Engage with your local representatives. Share your perspective in professional communities.

The future of AI shouldn’t be decided by a handful of tech executives. It should be shaped by all of us who will live with the consequences.

AI agents may be wearing lab coats sooner than we thought!

In 2023, Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google, privately funded a small non-profit company called FutureHouse with a mission to use AI scientists to automate and accelerate fundamental science in order to improve human health. At the time, they believed (as stated on their website), “that it would take 10 years to build agents that were able to do scientific research even semi-autonomously let alone autonomously.” Evidently they are way ahead of schedule.

November 5, 2025, they announced the release of their scientific research AI model called Kosmos, and with it, research that showed Kosmos’ ability to complete research that would normally take an experienced scientist 6 months only took one day.

In addition, they spun out a for-profit subsidiary, EdisonScientific, that will commercialize Kosmos. Not everyone is convinced of the accuracy of the company’s claims as portrayed in the articles below. Regardless, look for a massive VC-funded capital raise coming soon.

Anthropic discovers AI mischief

Anthropic is one of the five major frontier labs developing the most advanced Large Language Models (LLMs). They are also trying to position themselves as the lab that is most concerned with solving the “alignment challenge.”

Their intent is to ensure that AI models act and behave in a manner consistent with the goals of the human race. They often test theirs and other firms’ models to study if they can find evidence of misalignment or mischievous behavior.

In June 2025, they released a stunning report that I have just now had the time to read. The report also received widespread coverage in the press. I encourage you to read the report or research “Anthropic’s alignment research.” You can also catch the recent 60 Minutes’ interview of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei on the topic.

Simply put, Anthropic created a situation whereby it gave the various major AI tools access to a fictional executive’s email and correspondence. It then had the executive request AI to shut itself down. Buried in the executive’s emails were examples of an extramarital affair. The AI agents upon learning that they were to be shut down, threatened to expose the executive’s affair if they did not reverse the decision to shut the application down. This looks to the researchers like the AI systems are beginning to show signs of self-preservation. This is doubly concerning because due to the inner workings of the neural networks running the artificial intelligence, the human researchers cannot identify why this behavior occurs. 

The good news here is that Anthropic is being very transparent about this. Watch for this topic to become a significant part of the debate over the speed and regulation of AI development.
